Ticks in Virginia are a known enemy to outdoor loving folk. Deer ticks (black-legged ticks) are one of the three most common species found in Virginia, and are the ones that are most likely to cause Lyme Disease, though other infections are also possible. Tick bites are a risk anytime the temperature is above freezing, but are most active between April and October. More than 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme each year in the U.S., which is characterized by fatigue, flu like symptoms, and a bull’s eye pattern rash.
The best strategy for anyone spending time outdoors is to prevent the tick bite from occurring. River and Peak Outfitter has multiple products that can help accomplish this goal. We carry several sizes of Permethrin such as ‘Ben’s Clothing & Gear Treatment’. As the name implies, this is used on clothing and gear prior to going outside to repel and kill ticks & mosquitoes. Sprays that contain DEET are also effective deterrents for ticks and can be applied directly to the skin and last up to 10 hours to add another layer of protection. For a DEET-Free option, ‘Natrapel’ contains 20% picaridin and provides up to 12 hours of protection.
We also carry a product called the “Tick Key” that can be used to safely remove a tick that has bitten you or your furry friend. Stop by River and Peak Outfitter to prepare for your next outdoor adventure.
We are conveniently located at the corner of HWY 340 and HWY 55 (Royal Avenue and South Street) in Front Royal, VA, less than 0.5 miles from the North Entrance to the Shenandoah National Park.
